2nd Archaeomalacology Working Group Meeting Following on from the success of the 1st Archaeomalacology Working Group Meeting held in Gainesville Florida, 2005, the 2nd Meeting is currently in the planning process. Information will be added to this website as it becomes available. The Archaeomalacology Working Group had a dedicated session last August within the ICAZ 2006 conference in Mexico City. Çanan Cakirlar and Victoria Stosel organized this workshop entitled "Shells of Mollusca: Environmental Adaptations, Ideological Expressions". At the end of the meeting, it was decided that the next workshop will be in Santander (Spain) at the beginning of 2008. The organisers for the upcoming meeting are Esteban Álvarez Fernández and Diana Rocio Carvajal Contreras. For those who are interested in presenting a paper or poster at the Santander Meeting, please fill in the form below, and e-mail it to Esteban or Diana. Santander Paper Details (.doc) FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS AND POSTERS - March 2007 Theme: "Not Only Food: Marine, Terrestrial and Freshwater Molluscs in Archaeological Sites" Theme Abstract: We encounter different species of molluscs in archaeological sites. Most of the time, these were intentionally collected by humans in coastal marine substrates, wetlands and river channels, and taken back to the sites to be used for food. Often their remains form large accumulations. Evidence for shells that were not used for food, but rather as raw materials for making artefacts such as ornaments and tools is also abundant. Studies of molluscan remains typically concentrate on diet, but also consider other aspects of human lifeways, such as palaeoenvironmental context, trade and exchange, and artefact production. The purpose of this workshop is to present world-wide research on the many aspects of mollusc use by human societies. Organisers:
